Mohair yarn, fabric and a variety of embellishments are used to create Gossamer Wall Hangings. The mohair yarn creates a cobweb effect when wound by hand and then stitched to form the canvas and the fibres latch on to each other to hold the body of work but still maintain a wraithlike appearance.
The work is then trimmed with fabric, beading, sequins, ribbons, silk and a variety of handmade embellishments. Colour, texture and the subtle use of space flow together like a stream and the results are both beautiful and unique.
When I consider what it is that has been my inspiration as an artist I must cast my mind back over the years and think carefully about all of the wonderful creative adventures that I have enjoyed.
As a young girl I was always sewing. I didn’t even stop to consider that creating my own clothes was artistic; it was simply something I liked to do.
I studied floral art and loved every minute creating all manner of floral arrangements and crafts. After years of working in the floral art industry my creative path took me in the direction of oil painting and pencil sketching.
When I learned about the delicate way mohair yarn has the ability to form a cobweb effect when wound by hand and then stitched by machine I was fascinated! The fibres latch on to each other and help to hold the entire body of work while maintaining a wraithlike appearance.
Gossamer Art was born and this small step has taken me off in yet another artistic direction.
My journey with art is an adventure from which I am happy to say there is no turning back. When a spark lights a creative flame deep within my mind and an idea is born the anticipation I feel is delightful. Creativity is a gift that I treasure and recognise as priceless and I will continue pursuing artistic achievement as long as I am able.
